Family Travel Guide: Gulf Shores, Alabama with Young Kids
Relax + Enjoy….
If you’re looking for a family-friendly beach destination that balances fun for the kids and relaxation for the parents, Gulf Shores, Alabama needs to be on your list. We just took our 3- and 4-year-olds, and I can honestly say it was the best beach vacation we’ve ever had. Here’s everything you need to know — from where to stay, to the best restaurants, to can’t-miss family activities.
Why Gulf Shores Is Perfect for Families
The beaches here are gorgeous, calm, and safe. The water was the perfect temperature, and my favorite part as a mom was how shallow it stayed. My kids could walk out nearly 50 yards and the water was still only at their waist, which gave them freedom to swim independently while I had peace of mind.
On top of that, Gulf Shores has incredible wildlife. We saw dolphins from the shore, schools of fish jumping out of the water, stingrays gliding by, and my daughter even caught a hermit crab. Add in seashells everywhere (and beautiful ones at that), and it felt like the beach doubled as a nature experience for the kids.

Where to Stay in Gulf Shores
We stayed at Lollygaggin, a rental property that worked out perfectly for two families traveling together. It is also owned by Chris’s Cousin so we felt PERFECTLY at home <3
- Layout: Open-concept living room and kitchen area with a kitchen bar and a large dining table big enough for everyone.
- Bedrooms: 3 bedrooms + bunks. My kids claimed the bunks (but still snuck into our king bed at night 🤣). WE had the King with the balcony + a full bathroom to ourselves. The queen bedroom was spacious with its own bathroom, and upstairs had two double beds, another bathroom, and a kid nook.
- Bathrooms: 4 total (a lifesaver for multiple families).
- Extras: Two balconies, a community pool, and a pier for fishing. All towels and linens included!
- Overall: Clean, roomy, and stocked with everything we needed to rest, reset, and enjoy ourselves. They had a little welcome package with some dishwasher + laundry detergent, toilet paper and papper towels
📍 Location-wise, it was about 100 yards from the beach — so easy with kids and beach gear in tow.

Essentials & Coffee
On day one, we stopped at Pier 33 for snacks and essentials, which made settling in smooth and stress-free. For mornings, The Coffee House quickly became our go-to. Nothing beats sipping good coffee while watching your kids get ready for another beach day.

Family-Friendly Restaurants in Gulf Shores
Food was a highlight of our trip, and every place we went to was family-friendly. Here are our top picks:
- The Oyster House Marsh-front views, a playground out back, and amazing seafood. Don’t miss the potato salad from the salad bar — people come just for that. My kids loved the alligator bites (and the toy gator that came with them!). Bonus: an ice cream shop with colorful cones is right next door.
- Bahama Bob’s Right on the beach, perfect for a quick lunch. The spiced shrimp with Old Bay was my favorite meal of the trip.
- Lulu’s Grill Truly built for families. The kids played in the giant play area before and after dinner, while we relaxed at the table. The service was great, food was delicious, and the vibe was pure 15/10 parenting win.
- The Hangout Fun atmosphere with ocean views, even from inside seating. Great food and drinks, plus a play area in the back for kids.
- Lambert’s Café (“Home of the Throwed Rolls”) The most unique dinner spot. Servers literally toss rolls across the room (my kids thought this was hilarious). They’re also famous for their “pass arounds” — servers walk around with extras like fried okra, macaroni and tomatoes, and black-eyed peas, offering them to your table alongside your meal. Southern comfort food at its finest.

Parent Date Nights
If you can sneak away for some grown-up time, Gulf Shores has great options:
- Cobalt Restaurant — Amazing sunset views and outdoor dining vibes.
- Cosmos — Cute, laid-back, with live music and a fan-cooled outdoor patio that makes summer nights totally doable.

Activities Beyond the Beach
- The Track — Go-karts and an arcade were a hit after dinner one night.
- Fishing off the pier at our rental community.
- Collecting seashells and spotting wildlife became a daily activity that felt like a little adventure for the kids.

Family Photos at Sunset
One of the best parts of our trip was booking sunset family photos with @piercevisuals. Gulf Shores at golden hour is just stunning.
👉 Pro Tips for Family Beach Photos:
- Don’t let your kids nap right before (you’ll regret it).
- Get in the water — yes, clothes and all! The playful, candid shots will be your favorites.
I already know these will be some of my most treasured photos.

Final Thoughts
This trip had everything: safe and beautiful beaches, tons of wildlife, a perfect rental house, amazing restaurants, fun for the kids, and even a little time for the parents.
If you’re dreaming of a kid-friendly beach vacation that balances relaxation with adventure, Gulf Shores, Alabama is the place to go. 🌴✨

Getting There with Kids
For us, Gulf Shores was about a 5-hour drive with two little kids, and honestly, it went smoother than I expected. We don’t do screens in the car — it makes for a much more pleasant ride for everyone — so I’ve learned a few tricks along the way.
- I always bring our tried-and-true favorite toys.
- Before a trip, I make a run to the dollar store and grab some new ones. I hand out a new toy every hour to keep the kids entertained and excited.
- And of course, snacks are key — lots of little things they can graze on throughout the drive.
These toys aren’t just for the car, either. I brought them into restaurants in case we needed them — and they were a lifesaver at The Oyster House. The rest of the trip? I didn’t even need to pull them out because so many of the restaurants (like Lulu’s and The Hangout) had play areas built in that kept the kids busy while we ate.
