How to pressure wash for paint prep

So, in all honesty, 2019 was the last time we cleaned this porch! Shhh I know, I know…

I have big plans for this space and the entire backyard! The perimeter fence around the whole property, was the first crucial step, read about that here. Now on to the fun design projects, but first Phase I: Pressure Washing everything!

WHAT I USED

The Green Works Pressure Washer from Lowe’s is what got the job done. I have the 2000 psi model, it plugs in and also came with a handy surface cleaner that is literally like MAGIC. It set me back around $219, but trust me, it was worth every penny.

HOW I TACKLED IT

First things first, I tackled the brick, which was years of accumulated dirt being blasted away and was a little easier than the concrete which was next. For the concrete patio, i needed a little help to cut through the buildup on the patio concrete, so I used Krud Kutter Concrete and Driveway Concentrate to help power through the dirt. The surface cleaning attachment helps to wash a larger surface area at a time and is SO SATISFYING to see.

Feeling accomplished, as one does with power washing, I moved on to the retaining walls. I decided to give them a good rinse with plain water. As the water hit the walls, I was like holy crap…I realized just how dirty they had been all along. It was one of those “how did I not notice this before?” moments. The pressure washer didn’t disappoint, and the transformation was freaking amazing!!

Now, I’m faced with a dilemma. While the retaining walls look much cleaner, there are still some stubborn mud stains clinging on. I’m torn between painting them or leaving them as is. Maybe a fresh coat of paint will give them a more polished look, but at the same time, do I want MORE work?? I probably will…

All in all, it took me three full days of hard work to pressure wash everything and I havent even done the other side of the retaining walls yet . Now, I’m waiting for everything to dry so that I can MOVE ON TO PAINTING!!! Yay!

Stay tuned for part two, where I’ll share how I paint the brick, patio concrete and really start to transform this space for the backyard makeover!
