Deck Demo: Tearing down the old to make way for the new!

ITS DEMO DAY!!

It’s demo day, and let me tell you, the Deck South guys made quick work of tearing down our deck. First things first, we had to do to start this project was rent a massive 40-yard dumpster—and even then, I wasn’t sure it would be enough to handle this deck renovation. The deck itself is about 1,000 sq feet give or take so there is ALOT of material that needed to go.

Section by Section

The Deck South crew wasted no time kicking off the demo! They started by removing the framing from the screened-in porch and tearing up the old floorboards. Watching it comes down was a little sentimental for me because I put so much hard work and effort into that space in the last 5 years! This is what the porch looked like all put together before we tore it down. My one piece of advice after doing that whole deck would be to do solid stain if you can’t swap for composite decking! Anyway lets move on lol, the deck came down in sections, starting with the outdoor portion ( the deck island), which I hated so I was happy to see that go even though my prized bench that I took me 2 years building sat on it. I sold it though so all is well!!! Last step was taking off the railings, then the deck boards, and finally the frame.

How They Braced The Ceiling

After that, they moved on to one of the trickiest parts of the project. If you remember, we’re keeping the roof of the screened-in porch. To take down the frame that was holding up the ceiling, they had to engineer temporary supports. This meant cutting into the porch area and building supports that went from the concrete up to the ceiling. It was no small task, especially for a two-man crew, but they made it happen. Here is a video of how they did it!

The Rest Must Go

Once the ceiling was safely braced, they got back to work, tackling the railings and dismantling the rest of the framing. And here’s the wild part—they managed to finish everything in just three and a half days! Watching two guys move this fast and efficiently was absolutely incredible. The Deck South team is like no other!

After the Demo was complete it’s time for the FRAMING!!! We got all the wood from ProWood delivered about a month before we started! I still can’t get over how far this backyard has come and how much further we have to go! HOME TAKES TIME! This new deck has always been in the plans but we didn’t know when we could make it happen, still can’t believe this is happening.

Stay tuned @livingononepercent because framing is next.
