Step 1. CLEAR EVERYTHING OUT. I MEAN EVERYTHING. As you are pulling things out start sorting things into 3 categories. KEEP. TOSS. DONATE!
Tip#1 There will be several things that you find that are small but you know what they belong to. Keep them in one box so you can find them later when you put your garage back together.
Step 2. Get rid of any storage that is not functional! Some people think storage is storage, but if it’s not functional for what you need it for, it has to go. We had a skinny work bench that was too tall and too narrow with shelves underneath that just hid everything we were storing. IT ALL HAD TO GO. So we used a sledge hammer and got rid of the whole thing!
Step 3. Brighten your space as much as you can. I painted the dry wall and white washed our concrete wall and it really made a difference.
Step 4. Utilize walls for storage. We have so many yard tools that are difficult to store so wall storage was essential. We used wall control to help organize our yard tools and our power tools for easy access and visible storage. My biggest problem with our garage before was not knowing what we had or where it was! It was total chaos. We also installed the Triton wood storage system to keep the wood off the ground and organized.
How to hang Wall control on a concrete wall.
Initially we tried to drill pilot holes with a hammer drill but the concrete was too hard and it just wasn’t working. So we went to plan B. We decided to install 3 2x4s into the concrete using a concrete nailer . I didn’t even know these kind of tools existed. It was easy to use and got the wood up securely on the wall. If you use this tool make sure to use eye and ear protection.
Tip #2 Make sure you hang the wall control level and use a penny as a spacer in between panels.
Step 5. Bring everything back in and find a home for everything. We bought a very large Husky workbench to store all of our smaller tools in because before they used to live in a plastic bag labeled screwdrivers lol.
Tip#3 If you have too many of one thing – get rid of it. YOU DON’T NEED 8 screwdrivers that are the same exact size. You just don’t.
Step 6. Enjoy your organization and clutter free workspace and make a plan to keep it that way!
