Easy Sock Snowmen Craft (So simple and FUN)

Sock Snowmen Craft for the Holiday Season

The holidays are such a fun (and busy) time for everyone. If you’re anything like me, you are constantly looking for intentional ways to get creative with your kids to make the holiday season magical. One of the key details I’m looking for in a craft for my little ones is that it is something easy that they can do, with minimal help! I want them to feel proud of their accomplishments. This super simple Sock Snowmen craft was so much fun to make, and they turned out so cute!

What you need:

This craft doesn’t take much! I was easily able to find everything we needed at Walmart and on Amazon. If you’re crafty by nature, you may already have some of these items at home.

  • White socks: You can find these basically anywhere! You will use the white ones for the bodies of the snowmen, but remember, you will need more filling for larger sizes. I recommend these women’s crew socks.
  • Colored Socks: You can choose any pattern or color that you like for these, or use the ones you have at home that don’t have a match. Get creative with it! These will be used for the hats and scarves of your snowmen. It’s fun to let your kiddos pick their preferred colors or patterns, because they can make it their own!
  • Rubber Bands: The rubbers bands are what you will use to shape and tie off your snowmen.
  • Rice: You can obviously find this at any grocery store. But for convenience sake, just add this into your order with everything else you need! You can also use other filling, but the rice is an affordable options and easy to find!
  • Buttons: This is another opportunity to personalize your snowmen and get creative with this craft! You can also use little pom-poms to make it super fun!
  • Orange Craft Paint: You can easily paint on a little nose with this!
  • Black Craft Paint: I used this paint for the eyes, but you can also use black buttons or a sharpie.
  • Krazy Glue: This makes it easy to tack on the hats and scarves, and you can glue some of the pom-poms onto the tops of their hats to make them even cuter!
  • Paint Brushes: For their eyes, and any other creativity you want to add.

And now we begin building our sock snowmen 🙂

Fill and shape your sock

First, I grabbed a drinking glass to fill the snowman’s body. I placed the white crew sock down into the glass, then wrapped the top of the sock over the top of the glass. This really cuts down on rice spills, because let’s be honest, we need all the help! Then I simply filled the sock with rice, removed it from the glass, and tied the sock off at the top to create a knot. Once you have your knot tied, you can cut off the excess of the sock so his hat will fit nicely later.

Shape your sock snowmen

After tying off the sock at the top, I shaped the head and body of the snowmen and divided them with one of the rubber bands. This is a great time to let the kiddos get involved, and let them decide what they want their little snowman to look like!

Time to accessorize!

When your sock snowman is shaped and tied with the rubber band, it is time to add his accessories. I recommend adding these before adding his eyes or buttons because you don’t want any of the cuteness to be covered up if it is ill-placed! To create his hat, take one of the colored socks and cut it straight across the heel. When the colored sock has been cut, you can fold it down like a traditional winter beanie and place it on his head. (You may also want to add a small amount of glue around the band of your little hat so that it stays in place.) The hat is the best part, in my opinion. 🙂

Use the excess of your colored sock to create his scarf. I’ve cut the excess to make a wrapped scarf look (again, just tack the ends together with Krazy glue in a criss-cross to keep it together), and I’ve also just place the excess around the neck to create more of an infinity scarf moment. Both are adorable!

Next up: PAINTING

After his hat and scarf are in place, you can begin adding his eyes with black paint. And no snowman is complete without his carrot for a nose. But in this case, the orange paint is perfect for the effect! Here is another example where you can get creative. You can add his “buttons” with your black paint if you like the look of the paint. If you’re feeling really brave, you can let the kids get creative with some markers as well.

Now for his buttons

When you’re all done painting (and letting him dry a little), you can use your krazy glue to add on his buttons, if you choose not to paint them on.

I hope you have as much fun with this project as we did! These are a great gift idea for teachers and grandparents, as well. It’s so much fun to watch our children grow and learn new things. I love having items they have created with their own little hands!

Easy Sock Snowmen Craft

Directions

  1. Place your white sock into glass, and wrap the top of the sock over the opening of the glass. Fill the sock with rice, remove from glass and pack rice down into the bottom of the sock. Once the rice is packed, tie a knot in the sock and cut off the excess.
  2. Shape the head and body of the snowman, and divide the sections with a rubber band.
  3. Cut one of the colored/patterned socks straight across the heel, and fold down the end of the sock to create the hat. I recommend adding a little glue around the band of his hat to help it stay in place.
  4. Use the excess of the colored/patterned sock to create his scar, either by placing around his neck (like an infinity scarf) or cutting it on one end and wrapping it (like a traditional scarf). This is also another great time to use the glue to keep the scarf in place, as well!
  5. Use your black and orange paint, along with your brushes, to paint on his eyes, nose, and buttons (if you choose).
  6. If you choose to use real buttons, you ca glue those on while his eyes and nose are drying!
  7. Once everything is dry, you can get creative with his accessories and add a pom pom to the top of his hat, or let the kiddos decorate him with markers. 🙂
